Risks involving scar surgery

Risks in scar removal surgery have the same impact as in other surgical procedures where patient is submitted to anesthesia. They can change according to the different procedures chosen by your plastic surgeon, but you will be informed before the surgery takes place about the different procedures you will be submitted and their risks.
Here is a list of some risks involved in a scar surgery. Please remember this is just a guideline and patients don’t experience necessarily all the risks in the same surgery, some might experience and some don’t.

-

Infection (in the incision area)

-

Bleeding (hematoma)

-

Anesthesia adverse reaction

-

Skin sensitivity

-

Scar may grow or change color

-

Allergies to medication

-

After surgery pain

-

Healing problems

Safety

If you aren’t sufficient clear about the risks be sure to ask your surgeon all the details involved in your specific surgery. Surgery may be done in your surgeon’s office or in a hospital so all the environment is prepared for any kind of complication and surgical intervention. Mortality rates for this type of surgery are very very low.

How much costs?

Several factors may influence the cost of scar surgery. One of them is the number and type of procedures your surgeon decides it’s better to use in your scar. This will be determined according the type of scar you have. Other factors that may influence the cost of scar surgery are the anesthesia fees, surgeon’s fees, facility fees, medication and post surgery treatments. Here you can see reference numbers of some of the most used procedures. Please note that these are just reference numbers and they can vary widely from surgeon to surgeon and geographic location.

-	Laser skin resurfacing: $2,800 to $3,300

-	Facial scar revision surgery: $800 to $1,300

-	Microdermabrasion: $100 to $250

-	Chemical peel: light-$150 and $300 / medium- $1000 to $2000 / deep- $2500 to $6000

Once again I remind you that those are reference numbers because it’s very difficult to determine how much you will pay for a scar surgery before your examination. After your first consultation your surgeon can get more close values regarding your scar condition and the procedures that will be necessary to get the results you want. Pure cosmetic procedures (to improve patient appearance) most health insurance plans will not pay any expenses.

I would be lying (like some corporations do) if I say that scars can be completely removed. Well they don’t. There are several scar treatments and scar surgeries that improve allot the way your skin looks, but we have to confront the truth, and say that skin will not look 100 % has it was before.

Here you have the most popular and best scar treatments that will improve and repair your scars. Now that you know your type of scars see the best treatment for your case.
Feel free to comment and share your experience with determined scar treatment or surgery in the bottom of this page.

Laser scar surgery

– Using laser technology to remove or repair scars is sort of a new form of treatment. Laser scar treatment consists in exposing the scar to the lasers ( where laser moves along the scar), removing affected skin layers, which allows to expose new and more natural skin layers. The cost may vary from surgeon to surgeon, and the type of scar you have, with average price ( for what I have seen around ) being $300 / $400 per hour.

Dermabrasion

– This procedure is often used to remove scars, but also to smooth skin wrinkles, or other types of skin surface irregularities. Dermaplaning is a very common treatment of deep acne scars. The procedure consists in removing the surface of skin, and normally requires a general anaesthetic.

Silicone sheeting and gel

– Silicone is often used to treat hypertrophic scarring, and can improve significantly the scar appearance, even though the mechanism of action remains mysterious.

Steroids

– Keloid scars and hypertrophic scars are the ones that best respond to the use of steroids injections has a long term course. The steroid is injected into the scar, and it has to be injected under medical supervision. This treatment helps flatten and soften the scars.

Collagen injections

– Don’t think this is a very good treatment, as the results are temporary and it needs to be regularly repeated. Also there is a high risk of allergic reaction.

How does scarring occur?

Scars, also called cicatrices, are areas composed by fibrous tissue, which are part of the healing process after your skin is damage. Everyone knows that I guess, but is important to know that the healing process, or the way your skin will react is directly affected by your age, sex, ethnicity, and more important heredity.
The following two types of scars are caused by your body overproducing collagen, which makes the scar area to be raised above your skin.

Keloid Scars

Doctors and specialists say keloid scars are a more serious form of scarring, because they can grow into a large benign tumor. This type of scars can occur on any person, but are more usual in people with dark or black skin. Keloid Scars, over time, can affect flexibility and the best option would be a surgical removal, or as other doctors suggest injections with steroids. The most common causes of keloid scars are surgeries, acne or accidents.

Hypertrophic Scars

This are the most common type of scars. This type of scars, in opposition to keloids, do not grow beyond the limits of the wound, and most usually take the form of a red raised lump on your skin. Hypertrophic Scars tend to look better after a few years, but as any other scar type, will never gain the original appearance of your skin.

Contracture Scars

This type of scar is associated with fire. This is when your skin is burned you will have what is called of a contracture scar. This type of scars may affect your flexibility or mobility, caused by tightening of your skin, and can in some cases affect muscles and nerves.

Acne Scars

Those cases who experienced severe acne, like me, will most probably have scars, that are directly affected by the type who acne you had. Acne scar laser treatment is one of the most used treatments for this type of scars.
